Matt Hobgood - is there hope? (No, there is not. Indy League bound.)

Anyone have any articles or info on Hobgood?

The only thing that I can add here is that I know he's working out - hard - with Dylan Bundy. Those who know that workout know it's no joke. Just following him on Twtitter, it would seem that his head is in the right place.

If Hobgood or Klein com back, every pitcher with a shoulder injury should be sent to Dr. Craig Morgan. It would be a great story to see what a healthy Hobgood actually looks like.

I'm assuming that being in shape is part of your 'healthy' description. From what I've read on this board, Hobgood hasn't been 'healthy' since he signed his contract.

He looks like he's in good shape from some of his twitter pics but from what I remember when we drafted him, his curveball was very highly graded and if he is still able to command it with great break, his fastball doesn't have to be in the mid 90s for him to be effective he just has to mix his pitches pretty well. If he can throw it close to 90 and mix up a change up with those two pitches, he could be a steve johnson type pitcher.

Basically, yes I still have hope. Hope that he can be a 3 pitch pitcher (fb, curveball and change up) and mix them up pretty well, hope that he can stay healthy! and hope that he can climb a couple levels in the minors this season. I haven't seen any new articles of him since he was shelved for the whole 2012 season due to his shoulder injury.

I have never totally given up hope on Hobgood. It is clear he hasn't been totally healthy since the start of his career. Those saying he was a reach at #5 have almost certainly been proven correct; however, he still was projected by most as a mid-late first round pick, and those guys aren't talentless hacks. But obviously in order to even think about progressing he has to be healthy.

If he is healthy I have great hope for Matt. He worked hard all summer in Sarasota and he is my pick for comeback player of the year. He has never been healthy since turning pro. I hope he gets a chance. I look for Ryan Berry to get healthy and make a move as a reliever in 2013 too.

He's got mid-rotation upside if he's actually healthy, but after essentially punting his age 19-21 seasons he's a long shot to hit it. Those are critical ages for physical and mental development in the game. I'm rooting for Hobgood but not expecting a ton.

If his velo comes back he could end up a solid two-pitch reliever. Despite the arm trouble he's still been able to keep the ball on the ground.

Who :scratchchinhmm:

------------------------------------

Out of curiosity does anyone remember the other names we were hoping the Os would draft in that spot?

- Tyler Matzek was one wasn't he? (looks like a bust)

- Grant Green (progressing fairly nicely - almost MLB ready?)

- Zach Wheeler (doing fairly well)

- Alex White (already at the Majors, but 'meh' performance up here so far)

You can add Jake Turner, Aaron Crow, Matt Purke, Tanner Scheppers, and Shelby Miller to that list.

Even out of the bullpen would be a plus.

"We don't care," Jordan said. "I am not trying to be arrogant. We worked really hard, and I think our process is sound. This is the guy we decided to take, and we feel really good about it."

The Orioles contacted Hobgood's agent an hour before Tuesday's draft and said if University of North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley was already taken, then the Orioles would select Hobgood fifth.

Ackley went to the Seattle Mariners at No. 2, one pick after the Washington Nationals took ballyhooed San Diego State right-hander Stephen Strasburg. The Orioles' next two rated players, Hobgood and Georgia high school right-hander Zack Wheeler, were still on the board at No. 5.

"It was a tough one," Jordan said. "In the end, there was something that told me to do this. I really liked the other player, but I settled on the one I guess I liked a little bit more."

Ugh, how do you "settle" on someone you like better. I don't know if JJ just didn't have enough money to go after a really big draft class, or if he just poorly utilized his resources, but the end result was terrible failure.

    • Reed Trimble -  The just turned 24 yo OF was our 2nd 2nd round pick in 2021.   Injuries had limited him to 290 PA before this year with mediocre results.   This year at Aberdeen in 24 games and 94 PA he has 7 doubles, 3 triples, 2 homers, a .276 avg, and a .913 OPS.   Extrapolated over 120 games that would be quite a season.   He’s started 40 games in CF in his minor league career and 5 with Aberdeen.   No idea what his long term viability is there but he might be becoming a prospect again. Carter Young -  I can’t believe I just typed “Carter Young”.   I thought Young looked very meh last year in Delmarva.   Then I saw him in a ML ST game and thought he looked stronger, more athletic, at the plate.   Then he proceeded to OPS .340 in April and .440 in May.   I check the mil box scores everyday.  I’m thinking why do they play this guy?   Why don’t they just release this guy.  He stinks.   And then?  I’d see the box scores in June and he wasn’t awful.  So, I just checked.   In June, Carter Young, in 21 games and 87 PA, hit 3 homers, 15 RBI, and a .776 OPS,  the plate discipline (7 BB, 25 K) was not good but it was still something totally unexpected.  In 5 games in July he’s hitting .316 with a .771 OPS.  Hey, I’m not calling him a prospect but if this continues you might be able to mention that word and Carter Young in the same sentence. Juan Rojas -  Juan who?   Yeah, the 4th pitcher we got in the Jorge Lopez trade who had good numbers in the FCL and then bad numbers and injured since we got him.  His numbers still stink (ERA over 6) but two things.   I’ve seen him and he looks pretty good and he’s actually had some good results before tiring.  Still just 20 years old, Rojas only has 21 innings at Delmarva but they’ve been ramping him up slowly as a starter.   Last night he pitched 4 innings and gave up 3 runs.  Not good.   However, the first 4 innings were 1 hit, 0 walks, and 6 strikeouts.    I’ll just say, remember the name.    Yeiber Cartaya -  A 6’5 21 yo RHP signed in 2019 who hasn’t done much so far.  He’s been getting starts in the FCL and has a 5.22 ERA.  He also has 49 K in 29 innings and yesterday walked 2 and K 10 in 4 innings against a strong Pirates team.   I’m hoping the stuff is what I imagine.   Seems like a Felix Bautista type in the regard of “If he can consistently throw strikes he might really be something” and he seems to be figuring it out. I’ve got a few more candidates for this list but that’s it for now.

    • Man… I think I pull the trigger on that.   Doesn’t cost any of the top 3.    You could replace RMs bat with Mayo.    Losing Kjerstad sucks but you instantly have the best rotation in the majors for this years playoffs AND another arm to pair with Grayson for next year once Burns walks         Now,  would they do this?   They have to strongly consider it… maybe a slight tweak, but I think it’s in the ballpark.
    • Skubal also has relatively pronounced home and away splits.   His away ERA this year is still good though, 3.16
    • Eh that’s also possibly true. But the risk would be spread over multiple, as we’ve seen, volatile assets.
    • Agree I'm gonna sit tight with what we have now, pick up something at the deadline to bolster the pen that does not cost as much
